This week, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eventbrite.co.uk\/e\/teachmeet-culture24-tickets-31965836678#\">#TMCulture24<\/a> brought teachers and cultural professionals together to form new relationships and new ideas. More than that, it demonstrated an opportunity.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It all started with a first. I don\u2019t think a Major-General had ever attended a TeachMeet before. I am proud to say that TMCulture24 changed all that. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Evelyn_Webb-Carter\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Major General Sir Evelyn Webb-Carter<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> kicked off the evening, representing one of the main sponsors, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Waterloo200org\/status\/843873667692056576\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Waterloo200 &#8211; Age of Revolutions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk\/1999\/jul\/20\/race.world\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fascinating man<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who set the scene perfectly &#8211; reminding us that we can learn much from the past and from the best of what culture has to offer &#8211; and that children and young people deserve to access all the complex strands of culture.<\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 334px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/pbs.twimg.com\/media\/C7YLViwW4AUme2H.jpg:large\" width=\"324\" height=\"243\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sir Evelyn opens proceedings &#8211; while I tweet in the distance!<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/waterloo200.org\/teach-meet-what-is-it\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">evidently slightly bemused<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> about what was to follow, Sir Evelyn was the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Rs3dPaz9nAo\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">very model of a modern \u00a0Major-General<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and remained open minded, generous and took part in the presentations throughout the evening. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The fun began with with a take on <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/programmes\/b006vcgr\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ready Steady Cook<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; <\/span><b>Ready Steady Teach<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">! Two lucky people were given three ingredients for creating \/ remixing a digitally flavoured lesson. Digital artefacts from across the cultural sector were randomly selected and combined with one digital tool. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/dawnhallybone\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dawn Hallybone<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> volunteered (!) to go first, and was able to cook up a D&amp;T\/history\/science project looking at the design of military uniforms through the ages.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/oliverquinlan\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oliver Quinlan,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> given the story of the preservation of an 8m squid specimen, found a meaningful connection to making music using GarageBand &#8211; which was not a huge surprise given his musical background\u2026 though the ingredients were chosen by random!<\/span><\/p>\n<p>These very quickly created ideas were proof of the skill of teachers in connecting ideas and information worth sharing with kids, in an engaging way. \u00a0It also demonstrated that there were ways for cultural professionals to generate new ideas for educational resources, quickly and with teachers.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We were then hit by a series of quick, 5 minute presentations, interspersed by breaks for libations and connection making. Where possible, links to the presentations are given as links, below.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First up was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/oliverquinlan\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oliver<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (again) who spoke about the power of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raspberrypi.org\/jam\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Raspberry Jam <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">community sessions to unlock digital making with kids. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/0B8RcfZk-6lmuX1daWi1BYVRJaVU\/view?usp=sharing\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Presentation<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Joga5\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bill Lord<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, whose impassioned plea for connections into the cultural wastelands of rural Lincolnshire was both funny and important. If you want to connect your collections and cultural work with kids who really need you, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Joga5\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">please contact Bill<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/presentation\/d\/1H5Dw_bIDTSBz4_L45lhQjkxzf8wsmzHFJhYUdOVTS_Q\/edit?usp=sharing\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Presentation<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 327px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/pbs.twimg.com\/media\/C7YUcrnXUAI_yil.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"317\" height=\"422\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bill Lord on form at #TMCulture24 Photo from @CrawleyMuseum<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Next up was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/kaytopping\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kay Topping<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who shared the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Muse5aday\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">#Museum4aDay<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> project &#8211; directly grown from the #Teacher5aDay project &#8211; to encourage teachers\/cultural professionals to stay healthy &#8211; and #connect #notice #learn #exercise #volunteer. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After two (slightly more promotional) talks from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pobble.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pobble<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.shakespeareschools.org\/about-us\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shakespeare Schools Festival<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, we make it back from the break ready for the last few talks before we had to wrap up. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MrPatelsawesome\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pran Patel <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gave us a rousing talk about outward facing leadership, innies and outies, and collapsed arches!<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/pbs.twimg.com\/media\/C7YmJHMXgAA65qt.jpg\" width=\"524\" height=\"295\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally &#8211; we heard from Carol Allen, about \u2018<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ot-mom-learning-activities.com\/figure-ground-perception.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">figure ground perception<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019 and the implications for accessible digital resources.<\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 535px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/pbs.twimg.com\/media\/C7YkeSKXQAE9L2V.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/pbs.twimg.com\/media\/C7YkeSKXQAE9L2V.jpg\" width=\"525\" height=\"394\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo from @MadeByMikeJones<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unfortunately, we had to leave before we could hear the presentations from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.slideshare.net\/JulieLarner\/culture24-teachmeet-20-march-73382227\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Julie Neville<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.slideshare.net\/vwaldenstrodes\/working-together-towards-a-manifesto-for-a-popular-heritage-in-the-digital-age\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Victoria Grace<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; \u00a0(Sorry!) &#8211; but both were kind enough to share them here.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I was knackered by the end of the night, after an early start and busy day at <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/letsgetrealconference.com\/blog\/2017\/03\/03\/programme\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">#LGRYA17<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and nursing a cold. However, I was elated by the evening, not least as it proved the need for more events like these.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This TeachMeet was a result of a conversation with Anra best ideas come through collaboration where purpose and values were clear.
