Perhaps we are seeing the exposure\u00a0of a certain type of social media <\/b><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>fuelled<\/b><\/span><b>\u00a0personality. And it\u2019s not just Tom that\u2019s losing it.<\/b><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1288\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/03\/20\/arts\/music\/coronavirus-gal-gadot-imagine.html\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1288\" class=\"wp-image-1288 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ezekiels.co.uk\/eylan\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/20Virus-imagine1-3-jumbo-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ezekiels.co.uk\/eylan\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/20Virus-imagine1-3-jumbo.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.ezekiels.co.uk\/eylan\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/20Virus-imagine1-3-jumbo-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.ezekiels.co.uk\/eylan\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/20Virus-imagine1-3-jumbo-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1288\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo from New York Times article<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whether it\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/music\/2020\/mar\/23\/madonna-bathtub-coronavirus-crisis-pop-superstar\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Madonna, free from her publicists, sending messages from her bath, <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/03\/20\/arts\/music\/coronavirus-gal-gadot-imagine.html\">celebrities warbling into their phones<\/a>;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 with noone to tell them they are not as talented as they think they are, we are finding out who the truly greats are &#8211; those with class <strong>and<\/strong> talent.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Without the writers, editors, producers and creatives that have made them look good, people who have had privileged access to\u00a0 mass media platforms are now on more of a level footing with the rest of us mere mortals. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/av\/uk-52106893\/coronavirus-family-goes-viral-with-lockdown-les-mis-song-adaptation\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Families in Kent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reversioning Les Mis anthems are showing us more intelligence, humour, empathy and creativity than <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/entertainment-arts-52279109\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">those paid big money to front daytime TV.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Politico muppets like Toby Young\u00a0 (who has always been a nasty piece of work) have become increasingly desperate to grab attention &#8211; waving the limp vestiges of their humanity &#8211; claiming to have the answers to complex questions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s not that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenational.scot\/news\/18347875.coronavirus-fury-toby-youngs-claims-elderly-people\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Toby wasn\u2019t right that the Covid crisis isn\u2019t going to force us to make hard choices about saving lives,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> it\u2019s just that we can\u2019t trust the eugenicist-leaning, misogynist who has always cared more about getting column inches and airtime than moving the debate forward to improve our society.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Which brings us back to Tom Bennett. Let me be clear &#8211; I don\u2019t like him. It\u2019s not personal &#8211; I don\u2019t know him.\u00a0I don&#8217;t like him because\u00a0he has made a professional choice to use his platform to squash challenges to his interests, and damage the complex debate of how to educate our children: in a way that I think puts him with the Toby Youngs and Piers Morgans of the world. It\u2019s not <\/span><b>what<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> he says that bothers me. It\u2019s <\/span><b>how<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> he says it and how he treats those who disagree with him.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the silly world of ProgVsTrad, I would not be not on the same side as Tom, but I have huge respect for many who would gather under the Trad banner with him. These people do the hard work in schools, reflect on their practice rigorously, and repeatedly show themselves open to debate. I\u2019m not going to give a list &#8211; but it is hard not to respect people like <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mfordhamhistory?lang=en\">Michael Fordham<\/a>, for example<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course there should be a debate and disagreement &#8211; even strong feelings &#8211; but it\u2019s clear to most of us who can do this by showing humility and interest in actually helping others.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What Tom Bennett has consistently done is to play \u2018the game\u2019 to associate himself with Gibb and the small group at the centre of the current government\u2019s education cabal &#8211; by saying what ever they want to hear\u2026and whipping up false and discourse killing baiting contests to prevent proper reflection on the work we do in schools.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course, he is not the only one to do this, and this\u00a0is perhaps\u00a0a historical constant. There\u00a0 are plenty of wombles on the Prog end of the spectrum, of course. But, in this age of social media, they are not at the end of a ministerial leash.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>As those ministers are now doing the grown-up work of saving lives, and the PR teams at the DfE are busy elsewhere &#8211; we can see what people like Tom are like without their friends at Westminster to protect them. And it is not a pretty sight.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Briefly &#8211; On to the substance of Tom\u2019s tweets. I know the UK #edtech world pretty well, and I have never heard anyone say that tech can or should replace the human relationship between a teacher and a learner. In fact, even the great satan in the trad&#8217;s bestiary &#8211; Sir Ken Robinson says that this human contact is the fundamental element of education. The affordances of technology to support learning are real &#8211; and, while there are serious issues we <\/span><b>should<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> all be talking about (such as the claiming of our classrooms by VC data pirates &#8211; read <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/audreywatters.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Audrey Watters<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> people!)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead, Tom is picking on the very people trying to hold our schools together. The fragility of our education system has been exposed by this crisis and, while much of the edtech being used is a pure substitution on the SAMR model, it is all that many schools have when face-to-face is not possible.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikiversity.org\/wiki\/Instructional_design\/SAMR_Model\/What_is_the_SAMR_Model%3F\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1289 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ezekiels.co.uk\/eylan\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/The_SAMR_Model-1024x512.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"320\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ezekiels.co.uk\/eylan\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/The_SAMR_Model.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.ezekiels.co.uk\/eylan\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/The_SAMR_Model-300x150.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.ezekiels.co.uk\/eylan\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/The_SAMR_Model-768x384.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019m not here to defend the #edtech world, or to argue for or against any pedagogy. But, when #edutwitter big hitters are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dead_cat_strategy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">deadcatting<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by making ridiculous claims against #edtech, we should turn off in the same way we do from the sight of Eamonn Holmes spouting conspiracy theories.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SO, maybe this crisis, awful as it is (and will be for a while to come) will help us reclaim and reframe Twitter, taking the attention from the demagogues and extremists. Optimistic? Yes. Will we make mistakes as we move forward, Yes. Is it time to stop listening to Tom Bennett?
