{"id":366,"date":"2012-07-03T13:45:33","date_gmt":"2012-07-03T13:45:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ezekiels.co.uk\/eylan\/?p=366"},"modified":"2012-07-03T13:45:33","modified_gmt":"2012-07-03T13:45:33","slug":"rethinkingict","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ezekiels.co.uk\/eylan\/rethinkingict\/","title":{"rendered":"RethinkingICT"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>My presentation and script for the <a href=\"http:\/\/rethinkingict.wordpress.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">#Rethinking ICT<\/a> event on the 25th of June.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to<a href=\"www.twitter.com\/@chrisleach78\/\" target=\"_blank\"> Chris Leach<\/a> for organising and inviting me to talk, and for making <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RethinkingICT12\" target=\"_blank\">this debate<\/a> essential to all of us who care about EdTech.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/presentation\/embed?id=1gxx2ROefo0RJpEyC9PLQx40Gq2wyT4bO13fp_BtKsvY&amp;start=false&amp;loop=true&amp;delayms=3000\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"480\" height=\"389\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong id=\"internal-source-marker_0.8284855093806982\">ICT is dead<br \/>\nLong live ICT<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There are those who still believe ICT is a great subject, full of\u00a0opportunities to teach children important things like how to code or\u00a0make effective use of packages needed in the adult world, and provide\u00a0them with basis for building knowledge in this important aspect of our\u00a0hi tech economy.<\/p>\n<p>Bullshit<\/p>\n<p>You are great teachers. If we were hit by a solar storm and the electro magnetic pulse \u00a0wiped out our tech, you&#8217;d all pick up books, grab blocks and tools,<br \/>\nmaybe even chalk and be able to gather young people round a valuable\u00a0learning experience.<\/p>\n<p>The empty ICT Suite &#8211;\u00a0See Ken Robinsons talk<\/p>\n<p>We have been in the shade \u00a0of the white heat of our ICT revolution.<\/p>\n<p>Get over yourselves ICT teachers!<\/p>\n<p>Of course ICT is &#8216;important&#8217;<br \/>\nSo is geography, art, intergenerational learning&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>In fact, every subject has a claim to the timetable\u00a0and resources.<\/p>\n<p>All can release that alchemy between teacher and learner where high\u00a0quality and a broad education can happen.<\/p>\n<p>Also, given Moores Law, almost everything you teach will be out of\u00a0date within a few years.<\/p>\n<p>You know the kit is a distraction.<br \/>\nYou know even the best VLE can host nothing more than a load of static docs<br \/>\nYou know that the companies who decide what school can access rarely\u00a0put education first or user interests, as the priority they should.<br \/>\nYou know that initiatives come and go,&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>So why do we all get hung on these things<\/p>\n<p>So, in RethinkingICT my challenge to you is to ask, beyond the day-to-day implementation of your planning (however creative and exciting)<\/p>\n<p>What is at the essence of what works in Edtech.<br \/>\nWhy is ICT worthwhile?<\/p>\n<p>I think that ICT teachers have had \u00a0a unique role in schools.<br \/>\nBecause the kit breaks<br \/>\nUpdates run when you are not expecting it and change everything &#8211; normally back to defaults!<br \/>\nKids bring new uses, hack code<\/p>\n<p>You have had to be adaptive, effective (quick) learners, agile in delivery\u00a0and look for innovative solutions.<\/p>\n<p>It is these behaviours and approaches that the best ICT models to\u00a0children and teaches children to be ready for the technology that will<br \/>\nevolve through their lives.<\/p>\n<p>The best ICT teachers model this to their classes.<\/p>\n<p>Whatever you put into a new ICT curriculum, make sure that you allow\u00a0this to happen.<\/p>\n<p>Today I want to announce the birth of a new project &#8211; code name<a title=\"HackSchool\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ezekiels.co.uk\/eylan\/hackschool\/\" target=\"_blank\"> &lt;hack&gt;school<\/a><\/p>\n<p>To harness the power of all you smart and effective practitioners into\u00a0a hub for edtech. crowd sourced services, making best practice\u00a0accessible to all.<\/p>\n<p>More to come on &lt;hack&gt;school soon &#8211; but if you&#8217; d like to talk to me about <a href=\"www.onschool.org.uk\" target=\"_blank\">ONSchool <\/a>or <a title=\"HackSchool\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ezekiels.co.uk\/eylan\/hackschool\/\" target=\"_blank\">&lt;hack&gt;school<\/a> &#8211; come to chat to me in the break.<\/p>\n<p>Thank you<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>My presentation and script for the #Rethinking ICT event on the 25th of June.
