{"id":805,"date":"2014-12-11T20:09:09","date_gmt":"2014-12-11T20:09:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ezekiels.co.uk\/eylan\/?p=805"},"modified":"2014-12-11T20:09:09","modified_gmt":"2014-12-11T20:09:09","slug":"chorusofteaching","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ezekiels.co.uk\/eylan\/chorusofteaching\/","title":{"rendered":"A chorus of teachers"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\">In previous posts, I have applied <\/span><a style=\"font-size: 13px;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ezekiels.co.uk\/eylan\/adaptationselection\/\" target=\"_blank\">lessons from evolutionary theory<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\"> to the early \u00a0development of the new <\/span><a style=\"font-size: 13px;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.claimyourcollege.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">College of Teaching<\/a>. I hope it will also find a way to channel the creativity, innovation and diversity of our profession; a channel for all our voices.<span style=\"font-size: 13px;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.davidmcelroy.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Too-many-voices.jpg\" width=\"276\" height=\"198\" \/><\/p>\n<p>By setting up a professional body within <a href=\"http:\/\/t.co\/Ralh0P1tFD\" target=\"_blank\">terms set by the current coalition government<\/a>, we are in danger of locking our work into a mechanistic and technical model, losing the creative and progressive power of the work we do. \u00a0We are NOT like doctors, or actuaries &#8211; there is no simple evidence-based relationship of intervention to outcome. Yes, we want the raise in status (and better pay) but we&#8217;d be wrong to think we can appropriate the professional approach of these technical fields without losing our trusted place in society.<\/p>\n<p>This is not a concern about politicisation, but of setting the terms of a single voice and direction for <a title=\"The Red Queen \u2013 Evolving the profession\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ezekiels.co.uk\/eylan\/the-red-queen\/\" target=\"_blank\">a profession that should be diverse<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>How would the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.claimyourcollege.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">College of Teaching<\/a> have responded to<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/education-30398160\" target=\"_blank\"> Ofsted&#8217;s recent comments about the stagnation of secondary schools in England<\/a>? By agreeing we must work harder and that we need better teachers? \u00a0That is what I am afraid of! That is not the answer \u00a0I want given.<\/p>\n<p>I want a professional body which can speak for those of us who question the assumptions that underpin the political debate &#8211; and enable teacher to wrest control over pedagogy, assessment and curriculum from politicians.<\/p>\n<p>More than the suggested representation of all unions, regions, etc &#8211; I believe the College of Teaching must also represent all pedagogies and have a formal place to access learning from \u00a0educational technology; eg &#8211; the success of project based learning in raising attainment, or new models of CPD using twitter.<\/p>\n<p>A monolithic <a href=\"http:\/\/www.claimyourcollege.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">College of Teaching<\/a> will lead to our richly diverse profession stagnating. <a title=\"Adaptation and Selection\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ezekiels.co.uk\/eylan\/adaptationselection\/\" target=\"_blank\">The College of Teaching must find a way to represent the multiplicity of voices<\/a> within the profession and show we can handle the debate, on our own terms, with maturity &#8211; and space for all.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In previous posts, I have applied lessons from evolutionary theory to the early \u00a0development of the new College of Teaching.
